Hypothesis & Test Design

Define what you're testing and why before touching a single page

Write a one-sentence hypothesis: "If we change [X], then [Y] will improve because [Z]"

No hypothesis = no experiment. Gut-feel tests waste traffic and produce unactionable data.

Identify the single primary metric (conversion rate, opt-in rate, or revenue per visitor)

Testing with multiple primary metrics inflates false-positive risk. Pick one and commit.

Verify you have enough baseline traffic for a statistically valid test

Rule of thumb: 100+ conversions per variant per week. Low-traffic pages → qualitative research first.

Calculate required sample size using a significance calculator (e.g. Evan Miller's)

Input your baseline rate, MDE (minimum detectable effect), and target 80% power at 95% confidence.

Set a pre-defined test end date (do not stop early based on interim results)

Peeking and stopping early = 40-60% false positive rate. Run the full duration.

Isolate one variable per test (headline, CTA, hero image, form length)

Testing multiple elements simultaneously makes it impossible to attribute a winner to a specific change.

Document current control performance: conversion rate, sessions, revenue/period

Screenshot or export before the test. Post-test analysis requires accurate baseline data.

GHL Split Test Configuration

Set up variants correctly in the GHL funnel builder

Duplicate the control page as your variant (not build from scratch)

Funnels → Step → Split Test. Cloning ensures only your intended element differs between variants.

Make only your one intended change in the variant page

Review the variant side-by-side before activating. Accidental differences contaminate results.

Set traffic split to 50/50 for most tests (unless risk constraints require a smaller challenger share)

Asymmetric splits (e.g. 80/20) reduce risk but extend time-to-significance proportionally.

Confirm both variants are published and serve correctly before sending traffic

Visit both variant URLs in an incognito window. Check for broken images, fonts, or layout issues.

Verify both variants share the same form and same post-submit redirect

Different thank-you pages or redirect delays between variants skew conversion measurement.

Check that GHL's built-in split test stats tab is tracking sessions for both variants

Open Funnels → Stats → Split Test within 1 hour of launch to confirm impressions are accumulating.

Log the test start date, traffic split, and hypothesis in your tracking doc

A simple Notion or Google Sheet row per test. Post-test you'll thank yourself for this.

Tracking Verification

Confirm analytics and ad pixels fire equally on both variants

Verify GA4 pageview events fire on both the control and variant URLs

Use GA4 DebugView. Both page paths should appear within 10 seconds of visiting each variant.

Confirm form submit event fires equally on both variants

Submit a test lead on each variant. Both should trigger the same GA4 conversion event.

Check Facebook Pixel fires on both variant pages (use Pixel Helper extension)

Both pages should fire PageView. The thank-you page should fire Lead or Purchase.

Verify GTM container is live (not draft) on both variants

GTM preview mode tags don't fire for real visitors. Publish the container before starting the test.

Confirm variant page paths are not accidentally blocked from indexing

If running SEO traffic tests, variant pages should have canonical pointing to control to avoid duplicate content.

Set up a GA4 Exploration report filtered by variant page path to track daily conversions

Explore → Free Form → dimension: Page Path, metric: Conversions. Save for the test duration.

Mid-Test Monitoring

Watch for test contamination - not for a winner

Check at day 3 that traffic is splitting as configured (roughly 50/50)

A large imbalance (60/40+) suggests a configuration error. Pause and re-verify the split setting.

Verify no external changes were made to either page during the test period

Page edits, new integrations, or GTM changes mid-test contaminate results. Use a change log.

Check for seasonality or campaign changes that could skew incoming traffic quality

A new ad campaign, sale, or holiday during the test period biases results. Note in your log.

Do NOT look at conversion rates until the pre-defined end date

Statistical significance fluctuates wildly in early stages. Checking creates pressure to stop early.

Confirm the GHL stats tab is still recording sessions (not stuck at zero)

GHL stats occasionally pause. A quick check at day 7 catches data gaps early enough to extend the run.

Analysis & Decision

Interpret results correctly and implement the winner

Run final results through a significance calculator (Chi-square or z-test)

Inputs: control conversions + visitors, variant conversions + visitors. Target p-value < 0.05.

Declare a winner only if p-value is below your pre-set threshold (typically 0.05)

If not significant, the result is "no difference detected" - not a loss for the variant.

Implement the winning variant as the new control in GHL

In GHL split test panel, click "Declare Winner" or manually unpublish the losing variant.

Document the final result: CVR lift, confidence level, sessions, and decisions made

A test log compounds over time into a conversion rate playbook for your funnel type.

Identify the next highest-impact variable to test (use heatmaps or session recordings)

Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity (both free) reveal where users drop or hesitate on the winning page.

Apply learnings from this test to other funnels in the same category

A winning headline pattern on a webinar funnel often transfers to VSL and challenge funnels.
